Reimagine Buildings Collective: a practitioner room worth putting on the ExtraReach map

A paid peer community for climate-ready buildings—not Passive House–only— hosted by Zack Semke of Passive House Accelerator (PHA). I’m mapping it as a possible ExtraReach study room, not an affiliate pitch.

Quiet Passive House exterior with simple massing and soft daylight
ExtraReach is still planning. Good rooms matter as much as good PDFs—especially when the next question is “who has already built this detail?”

ExtraReach is still in the planning stage. Most weeks that means standards, incentives, and certified projects. Some weeks it means asking a quieter question: where do practitioners actually talk when a wall assembly, a mechanical shortlist, or a conference calendar gets sticky?

Today’s note is about one paid community that keeps showing up in that lane: the Reimagine Buildings Collective. Disclosure up front—this is a paid membership. I’m not an affiliate, I’m not getting a kickback for writing this, and this is not a join-now sales post. It’s a planning journal entry: what’s in the room, what it costs (as of September 16, 2026), and how it might—or might not—fit ExtraReach.

What the Collective is (and isn’t)

From the public landing page, the Collective is a practitioner community of roughly 250+ members—about 268 on the network count I checked—built around architects, builders, engineers, and developers working on climate-ready buildings. Host Zack Semke (also director of Passive House Accelerator, or PHA) and host Kim Davis are the names I’m filing for orientation.

Important for ExtraReach’s map: this is not Passive House–only. The FAQ is blunt—Passive House is a big part of the conversation, but members also work across healthy materials, embodied carbon, resilient design, electrification, and related climate-forward topics. That breadth is useful for a residential Passive House plan that still has to live in a wider industry (products, trades, codes, and client language that don’t all wear a PHI or Phius badge).

Takeaway for ExtraReach

Treat the Collective as a practitioner room adjacent to Passive House—not as a substitute for Passive House Institute (PHI) or Passive House Institute US (Phius) primary sources.

What’s inside the room

The landing page lists a working set of features, not just a content dump:

  • Peer forum — post a detail, product, or client question; get answers from people who’ve done the work.
  • AMA Fridays — live Q&A with Experts-in-Residence (examples named on the site: Ed May, Ryan Abendroth, Nidhi Shah).
  • Learning Journeys — focused trainings carrying American Institute of Architects Health, Safety, and Welfare (AIA HSW), PHI, and Phius continuing education units (CEUs); the library pitch includes dozens of CEUs included with membership.
  • Monthly cohort meetups — small-group sessions around a monthly theme.
  • Cohort courses — structured deep dives from Passive House Planning Package (PHPP) basics through advanced Honeybee-PH work.
  • Reimagine Tuesdays — fireside chats hosted by Michael Ingui.
  • Reimagine Labs — smaller “think and do” cohorts producing insight briefs.
  • Four conferences per year included — membership covers the annual Reimagine Buildings conference stack.

One practical plus for a planning calendar like mine: events are recorded. You don’t have to catch every live session to get value—useful when Virginia site work, family time, or a weekly sweep already owns the clock.

Takeaway for ExtraReach

Use AMAs and the forum to stress-test envelope and mechanicals questions; use Learning Journeys / CEUs as structured study between weekly sweeps; use the conference calendar as a planning input—not as the only education path.

Pricing (as of September 16, 2026)

Public plans on the landing page (prices can change—verify before paying):

  • About $49/month — monthly membership
  • About $499/year — annual membership (~15% save vs month-to-month)
  • 30-day money-back guarantee

Their own math for “does it pay for itself?” is that the four conferences alone run about $496 if bought separately (three half-days at $99 and one full day at $199 on the FAQ copy)—so annual membership at ~$499 is pitched as roughly conference parity, with forum, AMAs, courses, and CEUs on top. Again: that’s their framing, not a promise that ExtraReach needs all four conferences.

Takeaway for ExtraReach

Paid ≠ Reddit. Budget it like a professional community with a refund window, not like a free forum. Re-check prices on the live page before any join decision—figures here are a September 16, 2026 snapshot.

How this sits on the ExtraReach map

For ExtraReach specifically, I’m filing the Collective under a few practical uses—not under “auto-join” or “auto-recommend”:

  1. Virginia certified tours & intros — a peer room can surface people and projects worth asking for a tour or a warm introduction, which is exactly the lane the ExtraReach tour/interview template is built for.
  2. Stress-test envelope & mechanicals — when a wall detail or heat-pump shortlist gets weird, a practitioner AMA beats another anonymous thread.
  3. CEUs as study between sweeps — AIA HSW / PHI / Phius CEU Learning Journeys can sit between weekly journal sweeps without pretending they’re the PHI or Phius criteria themselves.
  4. Conference calendar — four included Reimagine Buildings conferences are a calendar input alongside PhiusCon and other industry dates.

Guardrails I’m keeping explicit:

  • Still verify anything criteria- or certification-critical against PHI and Phius primaries.
  • Not an auto-add to Nicole’s standing resources list—this stays a draft map pin until we’ve lived with it (or decided not to).
  • Paid community signal ≠ free-forum signal. Different incentives, different noise floor.
Takeaway for ExtraReach

Put Reimagine Buildings Collective on the map as a candidate practitioner room for VA intros, envelope/mechanical stress-tests, CEU study, and conference timing—then keep PHI/Phius as the source of truth for standards.

What I’m carrying forward

Three practical moves from this note:

  1. Keep the Collective link in the ExtraReach resources draft pile—with the paid-community disclosure attached.
  2. If I join (or trial under the 30-day window), use the first month for one envelope question, one mechanicals question, and a skim of the CEU library—not for binging every recording.
  3. Do not promote it as “the” Passive House community. Promote it, if at all, as one practitioner room among several—and always point standards questions back to PHI, Phius, and PHA’s own public materials.

That’s enough for a Resources note. The house still gets built on physics, documentation, and people who’ve actually sealed a building—not on membership badges alone.
